Exterior trim is the first paint on a house to go, and it goes long before anybody repaints the body. Doors and frames take the direct afternoon sun, hold the heat, and move with it. The finish chalks, then it cracks at the joints, then water gets behind it and the wood underneath starts to go. Caught early it is a prep and a coat. Left alone it becomes carpentry.
What this covers
- Front doors and door frames
- Garage door trim and surrounds
- Window trim and sills
- Fascia, soffit and eave trim
- Porch posts, railings and columns
- Shutters and exterior accents
What affects the price
Every house is a bit different. These are the things worth knowing before we can give you a number:
- How much scraping and sanding the old finish needs before anything goes on
- Whether any wood underneath has gone soft and needs filling or replacing first
- How many doors and openings there are, and how much of each is actually trim
- Ladder work, and whether second story trim or a steep lot is involved
- Whether the existing color is being matched or changed
Who does the work: The work is done by a trusted contractor we bring in, and you pay them directly. Woodbury Home Service stands behind their work and is on your side if anything is not right.

How the job goes
- Failing paint is scraped and sanded back to something sound before anything goes on.
- Bare wood is primed, and open joints are caulked so water stops getting behind the trim.
- Two coats on the trim, cut in by hand at every edge rather than masked and sprayed.
- We clean up as we go and walk the job with you at the end.
What we do not do
Worth knowing before we come out, so nobody wastes a visit.
- We do not paint whole houses, siding or stucco. This is trim, doors, fascia and soffit.
- We do not do interior painting.
- We do not replace rotten wood. We will show you what needs a carpenter first.
- We do not spray. Everything here is brushed, which is slower and holds a cleaner line.
Questions
Frequently asked
How much does it cost to paint a door?
It starts as low as $100 per door, and that is a realistic price for most doors that do not need a lot of scraping. A door with a failed finish or soft wood takes more prep and costs more, which is why the estimate happens in person and is free.
Why does the trim fail before the rest of the house?
Because it takes the most direct sun and the most movement. Doors and frames heat up, expand and contract daily, and the joints open faster than a flat wall ever does.
Can you paint over the old finish?
Only when the old finish is still sound. If it is chalking or lifting, anything painted over it comes off with it. The prep is not an upsell, it is the part that makes the coat last.
What time of year should this be done?
Exterior paint wants dry weather and moderate temperatures, so spring through early autumn is the window here. It is worth booking before the weather closes it.
